Every so often I feel like laying off the funny, more off the wall things I normally talk about on my radio show and talk real life. I may not be a national celebrity, but I am lucky enough to have a few people listen to what I have to say, and I feel it important to be a positive influence from time to time. Today I am revisiting a subject I wrote on about a year ago, but believe more than ever right now... Treating everyone well.

I run a rock station, not too many guys that are associated with rock n' roll are also associated with being a genuinely nice guy. But I've seen it, and I am not afraid to try to be one of them myself. To be cool, you don't have to be a jerk.

There are a lot of things that make us as humans cool, likable, and admired by others. But at the end of the day, when all the other stuff wears off you will be remembered by how kind you were to others. Period!

Human nature always has us trying to impress others. I am as big of a culprit as the next guy. Why else do I buy nice clothes, take pictures next to stars to show off to my friends, or drive a nice truck? It's not for anyone's good but my own, trying to be cool. Is there a problem with trying to be cool or wanting to be liked? Not at all. It is just important to remember the most important trait. The one that requires no money, no pretty face, and has no weight limit. Kindness.

I don't want to name any names, but there is one gentleman who lives in the same community I do that really got me to thinking about this subject. He is a tall, goofy looking man who probably hasn't bought a new outfit since 1975. But if he knows about it, this guy will be the first one to volunteer to help you whether he knows you or not. I have seen him volunteer his time all over town doing so many good things for the community, and for what? Because he has a kind heart. The other night when I was out to eat I saw him out with an elderly lady who may have been family, or just a friend, but the way he helped her through dinner and then as they left was nothing short of class act. I can almost guarantee he has been made fun of in his life more than most, he is the exact opposite of Tom Brady, but if I could I would wear his jersey any day!

When this journey we call life is all over we all know we can't take our earrings or bank accounts with us. We can't even take all the people who thought you were so cool that they liked your status on Facebook, all you get is your legacy. I don't know about you, but I would much rather have someone look back and say "that Shawn sure was nice and made everyone smile," rather than "that Shawn sure had nice shoes."

"This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness." ~ Dalai Lama
