I like to make fun of people, I like to laugh at people doing stupid things, and I love a good joke, but there is a side of me I don't let out as often as I should. A compassionate, caring side. That's why when I saw this story about a waiter in Texas that went way beyond his job description when he came to the defense of a five-year-old customer with Down syndrome, I couldn't help but share it. 

Kim Castillo, a regular at Laurenzo’s Prime Rib in Houston, was dining with her son Milo last week, when the child, whose speech is delayed, started talking with waiter Michael Garcia about his birthday party the previous week.

That’s when a family that was sitting at a nearby table moved, and Garcia heard the man make a disparaging comment directed at Milo. “I heard the man say, ‘Special needs children need to be special somewhere else,’”

Michael told NBC affiliate KPRC-TV. “My personal feelings took over, and I told him, ‘I’m not going to be able to serve you, Sir.’” He then asked the man, “how could you say that about a beautiful 5-year-old angel?”  Kim had seen the family move, but did not hear the comment and was grateful for Michael’s response, especially after hearing that the other family were regulars too.

“I was impressed that somebody would step out of their own comfort level and put their job on the line as well to stand up for somebody else,” she said. “I know Michael did it from his heart, and from reacting to the situation. I don’t think he stopped and thought about what he was doing.”

As for the family that moved, Kim would only say, “it’s sad that they’re ignorant.” Kim hopes Michael’s actions will encourage, “people to stand up for other people who can’t stand up for themselves and that it's worth taking the risk.” She adds, “Maybe next time they’ll think twice before they utter those words or say something derogatory about somebody else.”
