School officials have notified parents of students at University Middle School in Greeley as seven confirmed cases of whooping cough have been reported. The seven confirmed cases include at least one faculty member at the school.

School officials sent home three separate letters on Wednesday explaining the situation to middle school students. In a separate letter to middle school track athletes, where officials have determined the original infection originated, officials said all middle school track athletes must make an appointment with their doctor.

Once you become infected with whooping cough, it can take one to three weeks for signs and symptoms to appear. They’re usually mild at first and resemble those of a common cold:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Red, watery eyes
  • A mild fever
  • Dry cough
